Motorized Commutator

As part of a complete solution for research with awake, behaving subjects, TDT has developed a series of 16, 32, and 64-channel motorized commutators. Our lightweight cables, connectors, and ultra quiet motorized design minimize the torque caused by subject motion relative to a fixed cable. Sensors on the commutator continuously measure the rotational angle applied to the headstage cable, and spin the motor to compensate, eliminating the turn-induced torque at the subject’s end of the cable. Pushbuttons allow optional manual control, and an input BNC can be used to inhibit the commutator motor during critical recording periods. A banana jack provides access to external ground on the commutator. The motorized commutators are powered by a rechargable Li-Ion battery.
