Motorized Commutator

As part of a complete solution for research with awake, behaving subjects, TDT has developed a series of 16, 32, and 64-channel motorized commutators. Our lightweight cables, connectors, and ultra quiet motorized design minimize the torque caused by subject motion relative to a fixed cable. Sensors on the commutator continuously measure the rotational angle applied to the headstage cable, and spin the motor to compensate, eliminating the turn-induced torque at the subject’s end of the cable. Pushbuttons allow optional manual control, and an input BNC can be used to inhibit the commutator motor during critical recording periods. The motorized commutators are powered by a rechargable Li-Ion battery.
